Pictures Of Hives And Rashes – Poison Ivy Rash

A very well known allergic rash is caused by coming into contact with toxic plants such as poison ivy and the poison oak. Poison ivy (also called toxicodendron radicans, rhus toxicodendron, rhus radicans) and poison oak (toxicodendron diversilobum) contain a resin known as urushiol that causes the rash when it touches your skin.

These plants are the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis in North America. An estimated 75% of all people are sensitive to the urushiol found in these plants. If you are sensitive to poison ivy you can also experience a similar rash from mangoe leaves or skin.

- How long does poison ivy last?

After contact the itchy skin rash usually develops within a week. Both poison ivy and poison oak rashes last normally from 5 to 12 days.

- Is poison oak contagious?

The rash caused by both plants are very itchy but they are not contagious. Except you have urushiol on your hands than you can spread it over your body or to other persons.

What about poison ivy treatment?

The allergic reaction to both plants cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be treated. Washing out the plant oil as soon as it touches the skin helps in minimizing the rash. As a first treatment for heat rash a cool shower will help. Calamine lotion will help to relieve the itch. If the rash is more severe or involves mucus membranes your physician will prescribe prednisone.

- Some poison ivy home remedies which work for poison oak as well:

Mix one spoon of water with three spoons of cornstach, baking soda and oatmeal. Apply this paste over the affected skin to reduce itching.

Apply area aloe vera juice, watermelon rind or tofu on the itchy skin to soothe and dry. This gives a good cooling relief.

Pictures of hives in children – what do chicken pox look like

Classic hives are usually large red raised patches on the skin that are itchy and may be accompanied with a burning or stinging sensation. Children are not spared either. Children with hives rash really suffer as they may not be able to control the itching and may scratch and break their skin, which just makes the condition worse. For hives in children a treatment to stop or reduce the itching is highly recommended.

Viral infection are the most common cause of acute hives, particularly in children.

Some viruses can be easily identified, like chicken pox in infants. Have a look at some pictures of hives at the bottom for identification.

What is chicken pox?

Chicken pox is highly contagious and caused by infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV).

The virus spread through the air easily through coughing or sneezing. Chickenpox doesn’t spread through indirect contact only by directly touching a blister. It can spread from 2 days before the rash appears.

Chicken pox symptoms in children:

- it starts off with a papular rash on body and head. This red spots or bumps are often mistaken for insect bites.

- Fever is common and lasts mostly for 5 days. Other symptoms are nausea, myalgia, headache, sore throat, pain in ears, swollen face or complaints of pressure in head.

- Within the next 2 to 5 days more bumps will appear and they older ones turn into blisters.

- On day 4 till day 7 the blisters will start to crust over.

- When the fever is gone and all the blisters are crusted the disease is no longer contagious. The chicken pox incubation period is anywhere between 10 and 21 days.

Chicken pox in adults

is rarely fatal, but generally more severe than in children. Up to 95 percent of adults in the United States had chicken pox in there childhood and are immune. Can you get chicken pox twice? Only if the first infection was very mild.

What about chicken pox and pregnancy:

Pregnant women who never had chickenpox as a child can get quite sick and there’s a small chance that it would affect the baby too. If you think you are infected ask your doctor to give you a special type of immune globulin (VZIG) injection to help prevent you from getting a severe infection. Also all those with a suppressed immune system are at highest risk of serious complications.

Cholingeric urticaria or heat and exercise induced urticaria

- Cholinergic urticaria also called Exercise Urticaria, is a skin rash caused by body heat.
- It is caused by systemic overheating, for example athletic activity, fever, spicy foods, hot baths (40 to 42°C), occulsive dressing or emotional stress.
- Cholingeric urticaria symptoms are papules size 1 to 5 mm with a yellow tint. Is some cases shock associated signs may appear and misdiagnosed.
- The hives resolve within 1 hour after the stimulus and usually last for less than two hours.
- Lesions usually start on the neck, upper trunk und arms before they spread to include the whole body.
- Attacks can be decreased in severity and length by cooling of the person.
- Exercise urticaria might persist for years before it suddenly disappears.
- For cholingeric urticaria treatment try to avoid heat stimuli. Antihistamine medication is found to be useful, especially “hydroxyzine”.

Dermatographism is a type of hives, also called skin writing or dermatographic urticaria.

*It is one of the most common forms of the so called physical hives. When the skin is scratched or stroked with a firm object urticaria-like wheels appear. Therefore it is also referred as pressure urticaria.

*Dermographism simply means writing on the skin and 2-5% of the population suffers from this disease. The cause is unknown, but it may be triggered by allergens or stress. Watch the video on YouTube.

*Dermatographic urticaria is neither life threatening or contagious and in most cases it is only a minor annoyance. The hives usually lasts only 15 minutes. Have a look below for some dermatographism pictures of hives rash and a video.

Today I want to introduce some stinging, or so called urticating, or hive-producing caterpillars or moth larvae to you. Please have a look at the hives pictures and caterpillar identification photos below.

Only a few people realize, usually from first hand experience, that touching a caterpillar can produce some painful results.

Stinging caterpillars carry hollow quill-like hairs, connected to poison sacs, which they use as defensive weapons. The fluid poison is released when the hairs break, which happens by contact and touch. Reactions they cause range from a mild itching to the more severe pain, hives, dermatitis, and even intestinal disturbances.

The Puss Caterpillar (Megalopyge opercularis) is covered with a dense wool like coat of soft brown hair, with tail like hairs at the rear end. There are numerous short poisonous spines beneath the hairs that can cause severe irritation. You can the Puss Caterpillar feeding on various trees and shrubs, including oak, elm, maple, hack berry, sycamore, citrus and some others, even on roses. Young caterpillars often feed in large groups together. The peak months of their appearance are from July through November each year. Normally the severity of the sting increases with the size of the caterpillar. So beware of these toxic caterpillars as their stings are often more severe than those of others.

The Saddleback Caterpillar (Acharia Stimulea) is easy to identify. It is brown in front and rear with prominent horns, green in the middle with a purple spot in the center of its green saddle. Stings by this caterpillar can cause severe irritation. Saddlebacks are typically found on trees such as plum, cherry, basswood, chestnut, oak, also occasionally they can be found on corn and fall is stinging caterpillars season. Contact with this creature leads to a severe painful burning sensation, as well as a dermatitic reaction.

During its developmental stages, the Io Moth (Automeris Io) Larvae undergoes several changes, and becomes a stinging, or urticating caterpillar. Their spines are extremely sharp, and release a toxin with very little stimulation. The reactions to the toxin can range from a stinging pain and light swelling, to anaphylactic shock, and death in worth cases.

What can you do to avoid stings of these caterpillars?

The chances of running into these creatures are relatively low, but occasionally one species may be very abundant, but the more time you spent in wooded areas, the greater the opportunity for contact. Most encounters with one of these stinging caterpillars result from accidentally brushing against leaves on which they are feeding. If you find one on yourself, avoid to brush it off or slap it with a bare hand. Remove it carefully by using a stick or other object. Hollow spines may break off in clothing or gloves too.

What is the first aid for stings by hive-producing caterpillars?

Unfortunately there is no really effective home remedy treatment for caterpillar stings, even antihistamine drugs, often administered for bee and wasp stings, are reported ineffective. You should use some adhesive tape to pull out some of the broken spines in the sting area and your clothing, but use fresh, clean tape, several times. You should wash the area thoroughly with soap and water, this may help remove some of the irritating venom. Advisable is the prompt application of an ice pack or baking soda on the skin to reduce pain and prevent swelling. You have to see a physician if severe reactions occur, as very young, aged or persons in poor health are more likely to suffer severe reaction symptoms.

Pictures Of Hives On Children – Roseola Rash Pictures

  • Roseola in babies and toddlers is caused by a virus.
  • Roseola appears in babies ages 3 month and toddlers up to 4 years of age.
  • It usually starts with a slight cold and high fever between three and seven days.
  • The roseola rash appears often as the fever falls.
  • This skin rashes in children starts on the trunk and spreads to face, neck and limbs.
  • The color of the rash is pink or rose-colored, it has fairly small sores which are slightly raised.
  • This hives are not itchy and last only a few hours or up to 3 days.

Pictures Of Hives In Children – Pityriasis Rosea Pictures

*Pityriasis rosea, also called christmas tree rash, is a common type of urticaria seen in children.

* Pityriasis rosea hives are probably caused by a virus. The skin rash start as a single large patch, after a few days more hives will be found on back, chest, legs and arms.

* This rashes can last between 3 tand12 weeks and may be itchy, are often pale red or pink and appear in oval shape.

* A pityriasis rosea treatment might not be necessary in mild cases.
