What is lupus?

The lupus disease is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy skin causing swelling, pain, and tissue damage. Click here if you want to discover more about Lupus.

There are different kinds of lupus but the most common form and referred simply as lupus is known as SLE systemic lupus erythematosus (this form is affecting the organs). Other forms are cutaneous lupus erythematosus, drug-induced lupus erythematosus and the rare form of neonatal lupus.

Is lupus dangerous and who can catch it?

Lupus can range from mild to life-threatening and should always be treated by a medical practitioner. The good news is it is not contagious. 5 million people throughout the world and of all races carry a form of lupus, and lupus strikes mostly women between 15 and 45.

Lupus_facial_rashDiscoid or cutaneous lupus is limited to the skin and it is characterized by a rash that appears on face, neck, and scalp only. One of the common signs of lupus is the lupus rash, also called lupus butterfly rash, because it appears on the face in a pattern that looks like a butterfly.
